Finding Literature in our Collection

Searching for a specific title of a book or an author?  OneSearch can help!  Here are two examples of searches to find books by a specific author or a title:

Go to Advanced Search:

Using the pull-downs, search for "Author/Creator Contains" then add the name of the author:

Or, you can just search the author's name in the simple search in order to get every mention of them:

These two sources will help you find books that are well-known in African American literature. If you are looking for a book for English 1B, make sure you pick a book of fiction. Once you find an author or title, search OneSearch using the example in the first tab above.

Literary Criticism

Finding Articles / Books

When looking for literary criticism on a work, look for information on both the title of the work and the author. Here are two searches for Gayl Jones, author of Corregidora.

1. Searching gayl jones and crit* looks for all the books and articles that mention Gayl Jones and critical or criticism or critic. An asterisk (*) looks for all variations of the word.

2. Searching Corregidora and crit* looks for all the books and articles mentioning the book title and critical or criticism or critic.

Accessing the articles / books

Once you see an article / book that you want, click on the link to read it. If it is a print book, you can reserve it for pickup in V-26.

  • If it is an article, you will click on the link in the results list, and then again to access the article:

Then click on the database where the article resides. It should open if you are logged in. If you are not logged in, the system will ask you to with your SSO.
