"Chicano/a History: Its Origins, Purpose, and Future" Abstract This article surveys the writing of Chicano/a history since its inception and reflects on why scholars have been concerned with certain issues and how they have written about them. Born from the tumult of the Vietnam era, the field has challenged the status quo and emboldened those communities from which Chicano/a historians come and which they ultimately serve. Given the generation-long development of Mexican American history, this article focuses on Chicano/a historiography, with some commentary on the recent emergence of Latino/a history and the future directions that this field may take. It engages three questions that have driven the field: What forces engendered the ethnic Mexican community in the United States? Who comprises it? And how does the past bear on the present?

"The Interdisciplinary Project of Chicana History: Looking Back, Moving Forward" Abstract Chicana history has come a long way since its inception in the 1960s and 1970s. While initially a neglected area of study limited to issues of labor and class, today scholars in history, literature, anthropology, and sociology, among others, study topics of gender, culture, and sexuality, as well as youth culture, reproductive rights, migration, and immigration. In the process, these scholars contribute to the collective project of Mexican and Mexican American women’s history in the United States, making it diverse in its analytical themes, methodologies, and sources. Indeed, Chicana history is not confined by disciplinary boundaries. Rather, its cross-disciplinary nature gives it life. This article charts that interdisciplinarity and demonstrates its significance in expanding and recasting Chicano history more broadly.
“Chicano/a Challenges to Nineteenth-Century History." Abstract This article explores the usefulness of Chicano/a history to teaching and representing the nineteenth-century history of northern Mexico, U.S. imperial expansion, and the constructed nature of borders. Typically considered a twentieth-century discipline, Chicano/a historians have a long history of engaging the subject in the nineteenth century. This focus dovetails with recent critical works on race and gender in the U.S. West as well as transnational approaches to history. This article makes the case that the perspective on the nineteenth century provided by Chicano/a historians forces readers to reframe their understanding of the sweep of U.S. history.

Timeline of Latino Civil Rights, 1903 to 2006 This website is geared towards teaching in elementary and junior high schools, but this timeline is a thorough glance of key events in LatinX Civil Rights up until 2006.
Teen Vogue - "The Brown Berets, as Explained by Founding Member Dr. David Sanchez" "It's been more than 50 years since Dr. Sanchez was a founding member of the influential social justice organization known as the Brown Berets, and he is still fighting for the civil rights of the Latinx community. In 1966, his own run-ins with the Los Angeles Police Department gave him the idea to organize and build a community of politically involved Latinx. The Brown Berets became an essential part of the Latinx social justice organizations that gave way to the Chicano Movement of 1968. The mid-to-late 1960s were plagued by police brutality, profiling, and class injustices, and led to the 1965 Watts Riots in Los Angeles, and the Detroit Riots in 1967. For Dr. Sanchez, launching the Brown Berets had also been a response to the discrimination he faced because of his ethnicity."

United Farm Workers (UFW) *Official Website* "Begun in 1962 by Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Gilbert Padilla and other early organizers, the United Farm Workers of America is the nation’s first enduring and largest farm workers union. The UFW continues organizing in major agricultural sectors, chiefly in California. Recent years have witnessed dozens of UFW union contract victories protecting thousands of farm workers, among them agreements with the some of the largest berry, winery, tomato, dairy and mushroom companies in California and the nation."

CHICANO LATINO YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROJECT "The CLYLP Bay Area Institute (BAI) was established in 2014 to inspire and motivate students from the region to become the future leaders of the Bay Area Chicano/Latino community through public service. Open to 50 students from the 13 Bay Area counties, the three-day institute offers an impactful program designed to develop students’ leadership potential and increase their knowledge of the region’s cultural and political landscape. Institute participants connect with education, business, political and community leaders from the Bay and receive encouragement in their pursuit of post-secondary educational opportunities. Housing, meals and program materials are provided at no cost to the participants or their families."
